Study On The Empathy Status And Effects Of Undergraduate Nursing Student

Empathy refers to a perspective-taking ability that could stand in the position ofothers and understand the situation and feelings of others.Nursing Empathy means standthe position of others, understanding their feelings and emotions at the same time, It isbeneficial to do nursing work.Research has proved that empathy ability can improve bytraining,empathy is not only beneficial to establish and develop a good interpersonalrelationship and communication, and is conducive to the later nursing work.Objective:Through investigating the empathy characteristics of undergraduatenursing students and exploring the related influential factors of empathy.and It couldprovide the basis for cultivating empathy ability of undergraduate nursing students.Methods:Using stratified sampling method, the author selected nursingundergraduate students of Dalian Medical University as the research object. In June2012, the author selected undergraduate nursing students of Dalian Medical University,under the premise of ensuring the representation and size of the sample,299effectivelyout of300questionnaires,I statistics the number of different political landscape, studentnationalities and gender respectively,and use unified questionnaire to see empathy statusand influence factors of undergraduate nursing students.I used SPSS17.0statisticalsoftware,analyzing the distribution of each variable with descriptive statistics,comparingthe different characteristics of empathy of nursing students with t-test,analyzingcorrelation influential factors of empathy with general linear regression,and analyzingrelated influential factors of empathy with multiple stepwise regression.Questionnaires:1.General information questionnaire.including gender,grade, political landscape,origin..2.IRI-C(the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, IRI-C) questionnaire[1], which is usedto measure college students’ empathy ability.It include22questions,divided into fourdimensions:perspective-taking,compassion,fancy and personal distress. 3.College students’ self-congnitive questionnaire[2].4.Big Five Personality Scale of Chinese Simplified Version(BFI)[3], It was used tomeasure college students groups.Results1.299effectively out of300questionnaires, effective rate was99.7%. Among them,first grade99(33.1%),second grade100(33.4%),third grade100(33.4%);Male17(5.7%),female282(94.3%);party members15(5.0%),others284(95.0%); towns students238(79.6%), rural students61(20.4%).2.Empathy scores of Undergraduate nursing students was52.68±10.53, each itemaverage scores was2.37, the standard deviation was0.36, higher than average scores2.So empathy ability of nursing students was slightly higher than the level of median.3.empathy of nursing students in different grade was statistically significantdifference (P<0.05, P<0.01);Different gender, origin, empathy of nursing students wasno statistically significant difference (P>0.05, P>0.01).4.Empathy scores was positively correlated to agreeableness, extraversion andcaution(P<0.05, P<0.01), neuroticism and openness was not related to empathy(P>0.05,P>0.01).5.Empathy scores was positively correlated to many dimensions of self-cognition(P <0.05, P<0.01), and self-will and personal deficiencies was no correlated to empathy(P>0.05, P>0.01), and personal distress and many dimensions of self-cognition wasnegatively correlated (P<0.05, P<0.01).6.Multiple stepwise regression showed social self, social work,different grade,neuroticism, agreeableness was the main influence factors of empathy of nursingstudents.Conclusion：1.The overall level of empathy of nursing students is slightly higher than mediumlevel.2.Different grade,personality and self-cognition affected the level of empathy ofnursing students.3.Social self, social work, neuroticism, agreeableness is the main influence factorsof empathy of nursing students4.Different gender, political status,native place has no impact on the level of empathy,It may be associated with less sample size.
