In the context of coordinated regional development as one of the major national strategies in the new era,the ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin becoming a major national strategy, and the Gansu section of the Yellow River Basin being the main subject of optimisation of Gansu’s territorial spatial pattern, the Gansu section of the Yellow River Basin has become an important part of the high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin and the main bearer of Gansu Province’s socio-economic development, and its coordinated regional economic development and rational layout of the spatial structure of towns are of great significance in narrowing intra-regional differences and contributing to high-quality regional socio-economic development.Taking the socio-economic development of the Gansu section of the Yellow River Basin as a starting point, this paper divides the spatial structure of the urban economy into three parts: regional economic linkage network structure, competitive advantage structure and industrial agglomeration structure, and analyses and studies the spatial structure of the urban economy of the Gansu section of the Yellow River Basin at two scales: city and county,in terms of time series and spatial order.Firstly, the evolution characteristics of regional economic linkage network structure, town competitive advantage structure and industrial agglomeration structure are discussed with the help of gravitational force model and location quotient index, and on this basis, the trajectory, speed and direction of the evolution of the centre of gravity of town competitive advantage structure and centre of gravity of industrial agglomeration structure are analysed with the help of centre of gravity model. The spatial structure of the urban economy in the Gansu section of the Yellow River Basin is explored with the help of the DEA model;then the factors of the spatial structure of the urban economy are detected with the help of a geographic probe, and the evolution of the competitive advantage and industrial agglomeration of the towns is explored with the characteristics of industrialisation stages. Finally, based on the region’s own situation and existing research findings, specific strategies for optimising the spatial structure of the regional economy are proposed in four aspects:building an economic belt for regional ecological protection and high-quality development, strengthening the structure of the social and economic linkage network, optimising the structure of the competitive advantages of towns and cities, and improving the structure of the level of industrial agglomeration. The relevant conclusions are as follows:(1)The spatial structure of the urban economy has evolved. In terms of the structure of the regional urban economic linkage network, the city and state scales have undergone the spatial structure evolution process of "inverted V-Big Dipper-network prototype",while the county-The level of regional economic networks is still relatively low overall. In terms of the competitive advantage of cities and towns, the city-state scale has undergone the evolutionary process of "monocentric structure(Lanzhou City)-core-edge structure(Lanzhou City and its neighbouring cities and states)";the district and county scale has undergone the evolutionary process of "monocentric structure-perforated structure".At the district and county scales, the evolution process is "monocentric structure-perforated structure".On the industrial agglomeration structure, the primary industry agglomeration structure: the city and state scale has undergone the evolution process of "localized structure-pie-type structure",and this structure has gradually strengthened, while the district and county scale has undergone the evolution process of "global structure-perforated structure".The secondary industry agglomeration structure: the city and state scales have undergone the evolution process of "perforated structure-localized structure-perforated structure",while the district and county scales have maintained the perforated structure, which has been gradually strengthened;the tertiary industry agglomeration structure: the city and state scales have experienced the evolution process of "perforated structure-localized structure-perforated structure".The tertiary industry agglomeration structure: the city and state scale has undergone the evolution process of "perforated structure-localized structure",while the district and county scale has undergone the evolution process of "perforated structure-localized structure-perforated structure".At the city and county scales, the structure of the tertiary industry has evolved through a process of "perforated structure-localised structure" and "perforated structure-localised structure".(2)The migration characteristics of the centre of gravity of the spatial factors of urban economy. On the migration trajectory, the migration trajectory of the centre of gravity of the competitive advantage structure of cities and towns at the city-state scale is stable, the migration trajectory of the centre of gravity of the primary industry agglomeration structure is tortuous, and the migration trajectory of the centre of gravity of the secondary and tertiary industry agglomeration structures is roundabout. At the district and county scales, most of the districts and counties under the jurisdiction of the city and prefecture have a tortuous migration trajectory, with the primary and secondary industry agglomerations moving in a roundabout way,and the tertiary industry agglomerations moving in a tortuous way.In terms of migration speed, the city-state scale competitive advantage structure, primary industry agglomeration structure and tertiary industry agglomeration structure all have a slow migration speed, while the secondary industry agglomeration structure has a medium or fast migration speed. At the district and county scales, the migration speed of the centre of gravity point set of the competitive advantage structure is slow overall, while the migration speed of the centre of gravity point set of the primary and tertiary industry agglomeration structures is mainly slow and medium, and the migration speed of the centre of gravity point set of the secondary industry agglomeration structure is mainly medium and slow.In terms of migration direction, the migration direction of the centre of gravity of the competitive advantage structure of the town at both scales is mainly in the "southeast-northwest" direction. The direction of migration of the centre of gravity of the "three" industrial agglomerations in Pingliang is consistent with the overall direction of migration of the centre of gravity of the Gansu section of the Yellow River Basin, while the direction of migration of the centre of gravity of the "three" industrial agglomerations in Baiyin and Wuwei deviates from the overall direction of development of the regional industries. The direction of industrial agglomeration development in Baiyin and Wuwei is contrary to the overall direction of regional industrial development.(3)Exploring the effectiveness of the spatial structure of the urban economy. The competitive advantage structure of cities and towns at both the district and prefectural scales has gradually evolved into a reasonable one, reaching a relative optimum in 2020,while the "three" industrial agglomeration structures still have some room for optimization and improvement. If we rank the difficulty of optimising the spatial structure of the economy,at the city and prefecture scales: primary industry agglomeration > secondary industry agglomeration > competitive advantage structure of towns, while the tertiary industry agglomeration structure is not compared because the S-value of the slack variable is zero;at the district and county scales: tertiary industry agglomeration > secondary industry agglomeration >primary industry agglomeration > competitive advantage structure of towns.(4)In terms of the detection of spatial factors influencing the town’s economy. It is found that the higher the proportion of a certain type of industry in the total regional economy, the more agglomerated the development of the corresponding industry. In the interactive detection of the influence factors of the agglomeration development of the three industries, the proportion of the corresponding industry in the GDP and the urbanisation rate increase together, which is more conducive to the agglomeration development of the industry. In addition, the results of the cross-testing show that the agglomeration development between primary and tertiary industries shows a close relationship due to the special development status and natural environment of the Gansu section of the Yellow River Basin.(5)The regular characteristics of urban economic development factors. It was found that the development of industrial agglomeration with the advancement of industrialisation showed obvious regular characteristics, and that the development of the three industrial agglomerations formed the cyclical change pattern of "one, three, two, two, three, one, three, two, one",which is different from the traditional industrial structure evolution trend of "one, two, three, two, three, one, three, two, one".There is a certain difference in the perception of "one,two,three,two,three,one,three,two,one",i.e.regional towns have an "early effect" on the development of tertiary industries due to the late start of urbanisation compared to external regions. The pattern of changes in the competitive advantage of regional towns breaks away from the conventional thinking that the competitive advantage of towns continues to rise as industrialisation progresses, and finds that there are stages of diminishing competitive advantage of towns in the process of moving from the accelerated stage of industrialisation to the mature stage,i.e.the "transition effect" of competitive advantage of towns as industrialisation progresses.(6)Spatial structure optimization strategy of urban economy. On the construction of the ecological and economic belt in the Gansu section of the Yellow River Basin: specific strategies for policy support and protection and spatial development layout are proposed at the levels of ecological protection and high-quality development respectively. On the optimization of the structure of the economic linkage network of towns: develop and build effective markets, actively cultivate market awareness, and orderly promote the flow of resources, labour, capital, technology and other factors. On the structural optimisation of the competitive advantages of towns and cities: strengthen the power system of town development, firmly establish the new urbanisation path of innovation-driven,ecological protection and intelligent construction, and provide policy guidance in terms of the rank, scale and functions of towns and cities. In terms of optimising the structure of industrial agglomeration in towns and cities: the layout of industrial development is rationalised by combining the current state of development of the three industrial agglomerations,so as to achieve synergistic development of industries between towns and cities, form industrial development chains and accelerate the enhancement of the capacity of industries to undertake agglomeration.
