On February 7,1941,a number of American nongovernmental aid organizations merged to form the United China Relief(UCR).As a coalition of U.S.nongovernmental supporters of China during the World War II,the UCR was dedicated to assisting China in the areas of health care, child welfare, refugee relief, economic reconstruction, and education.Through extensive, intensive, and targeted mobilization for China, the UCR was able to raise approximately $28.74 million from 1941 to 1944 and $17.11 million was remitted to China, making it an effective fundraising effort. Most of the existing research focuses on the U.S.government’s support for China, but less on the U.S.nongovernmental aid to China, and even less on the UCR.In order to give the American public a more comprehensive understanding of China and its aid programs,UCR established the News of United China Relief, which was published monthly in September 1942 at 1790 Broadway Street,New York City, and ended in May-June 1946,with a total of 45 issues.During the war period, the issue of refugee children received widespread attention both at home and abroad, and the relief of refugee children was also an important part of the UCR’s assistance,so the News of United China Relief presented a lot of graphic reports on the relief of refugee children.Based on narrative and visual rhetoric studies, this paper uses textual analysis to explore how the News of United China Relief conveyed and interpreted the lifestyle and spirit of China’s wartime people through its coverage of the rescue work of refugee children and its portrayal of children, thereby The mobilization for China was achieved. The specific ideas are as follows:The first chapter explained the background of the News of United China Relief ’coverage of refugee children, which was based on the establishment of the UCR in the international context of the emergence of nongovernmental aid organizations in the U.S.In addition, the need to care for refugee children at home and abroad had prompted the News of United China Relief to report on refugee children. The second chapter made mathematical statistics on the number, subject matter, source of contributions, and the number, type, and significant characteristics of disaster relief images in the News of United China Relief as a whole,in an attempt to have a macro grasp of the graphic and textual content of the disaster relief report. The third chapter based on the graphic reports on the relief work for refugee children, analyzing the four types of images of refugee children portrayed by the News of United China Relief: war victims, independent and self-reliant self-rescuers,those who were loved and cared for,and those who played the role of propaganda symbols, which in the practice of mobilization for China, the image of children had both the task of displaying China’s image and mobilizing moral conscience;secondly, this paper analyzed the contents of the relief work for refugee children in the context of education and raising, which the News of United China Relief showed mainly covered two major areas: education in culture, skills and health, and raising to provide basic livelihood security, medical support and nutritional support. The fourth chapter analyzed the rescue reports of difficult children from the perspective of image narrative. In terms of perspective dispatching,it presented the characteristics of omniscient perspective showing the whole story and limited perspective inspiring readers’ empathy;in terms of narrative structure,it presented the characteristics of non-linear narrative highlighting the depth of rescue and non-linear narrative highlighting the breadth of rescue;in terms of narrative rhetoric,it presented the characteristics of visual metaphor sublimating the meaning of rescue and visual metaphor constructing Chinese imagery. Finally, the paper examined the significance of the newspaper’s coverage of the rescue of refugee children from both practical and historical perspectives. The images and the text complement each other as historical evidence to recreate a picture of the rescue of refugee children, while the images conveyed the intention of China aid through narrative techniques, thus achieving social mobilization for China aid.In addition,as an archive of China from the perspective of the "other",the News of United China Relief had certain limitations in its coverage of China, intending to make China a country with Christian morality, political democracy, and modernized industry to satisfy the American fantasy of an "Asian version of America".
