Relief is the product of combining sculpture with painting. It represents 3D space with the methods such as compression, perspective, and so on. The CAD (Compter-aided Design) process for a relief product basically has three phases: base surface design, relief design and the pasting. In the phase of relief design, some modification and editing are generally needed to do beautification for the relief. In this paper, the techniques of relief editing and pasting are studied. The relief editing in this paper contains relief surface resampling, multiple reliefs fusing, and line-engraving relief editing. After the relief is completely designed, it could be pasted on the base surface of the product. We proposed a relief pasting algorithm based on normal vector adjustment. At last, the relief product is carved on a CNC engraving machine. The main contents of this paper are listed as follow:Two types of relief editing operations, which are relief surface resampling and multiple reliefs fusing, are implemented by utilizing Z buffer algorithm and regular sampling.A method for editing line-engraving relief is proposed. The original line-engraving relief is generated by compressing the depth of feature areas on the mesh model. Then the axial lines of the feature areas are extracted using a series of operations such as clustering, eliminating, retrieving and thinning. By changing the width and depth of the line, we can get a new relief.A relief pasting algorithm based on normal vector adjustment is proposed. Firstly, an area on the target object is specified and parameterized onto a plane, so that the relationship between the source relief and the target area is established. Secondly, an algorithm based on normal vector adjustment is designed for relief wrapping on the new base with less distortion. Finally, the relief and the target area are integrated into a complete triangular mesh. The algorithm reduces the distortion of the relief and produces good visualization effect for the product with larger curvature.After the NC codes are produced in JDPaint sofeware, we get the physical product which is carved on the CNC engraving machine.
