A Study On The Discourse Strategy Of China Daily Twitter Account’s Beijing Winter Olympics Coverage

At a time when the world is undergoing unprecedented profound changes,the international community is becoming increasingly divided and conflicted,and the trend of counter-globalization is intensifying.Countries around the world urgently need to step up communication,dialogue and adaptation.The modern Olympic Games,as a global sports event,not only continuously transmits the Olympic spirit of solidarity,fraternity and fair competition to the international community,it also provides an important opportunity for different countries to have an equal dialogue and resolve their differences.The success of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing clearly means more than the sporting event itself.In addition,the rise of social media platforms represented by Twitter accelerates the change of international public opinion environment,and gradually becomes the breakthrough for our mainstream media to break through the Western discourse monopoly and enhance the voice of international discourse.In this paper,content analysis,discourse analysis and case study are used to analyze the reports of the Beijing Winter Olympics published by China Daily’s Twitter account.First of all,from the perspective of text and context,this study summarizes the overall coverage and micro-discourse features of the sample tweets.Secondly,on the basis of the study of the effectiveness of the sample tweets,this study summarizes the problems of its reporting discourse strategy,and provides some suggestions on how to improve the international communication of our mainstream media.The study found that the number and frequency of the reports on the Beijing Winter Olympics published by China Daily’s Twitter account showed a trend of first rising and then falling,while the subjects of the reports showed a three-dimensional and diversified feature.In addition,the related reports pay more attention to the visual effect in the form of the content,while the reports focus on the citation of the multi-source content.From the perspective of text,the content of its reports uses more relevant nouns in vocabulary,mainly declarative sentences in sentence structure,and actively uses tag,rhetoric and other narrative techniques.From the perspective of context,the content of its reports is based on the dissemination of sports events,forming a framework of sports events broadcasting,political and diplomatic communication,and spiritual and cultural sharing.In general,the Twitter account of China Daily has formed a relatively fixed discourse strategy and narrative mode when reporting on the Winter Olympics.However,there are still some deficiencies in content fineness,discourse style,interactivity and speech accuracy.Based on this,this study believes that to improve the international communication ability of China’s mainstream media can be done from the following four points: to improve the quality of content,relying on details to win over overseas audiences;story-based expression,with the truth to tell the story of China;pay attention to interaction,through others to convey the Chinese voice;improve accuracy,innovation to create a pattern of publicity.
