Abstract/Summary:
As a core track of international competition, the development of 5G technology is becoming an important factor which can influence the scientific and technological strength, the industrial competency, and even the international status of a country.5G topics, therefore, have become the focus of the reports from the mainstream media around the world. At present,China’s 5G technology and its related industry growth has taken the the worldwide lead. However, under the current trend of anti-globalization,which is manifested in the China–United States trade war, however, some Western media have negative reports on China’s 5G.In the name of‘information security threats’,they launched public opinion attacks, which caused obstacle to the development of China’s 5G technology. The negative factors in the international public opinions also make it difficult for China 5G-related business to develop overseas markets. And the situation is also detrimental to the growth of global 5G technology,as well as that of China’s 5G.Facing the complicated international public opinion environment,China’s 5G development needs strong support in public opinion.Based on the above situation, this research focuses on the news reports of 5G topics(from November 2019 to December 2020)in China Daily and The Times, the two most representative and influential media in international communication, from China and the UK.Based on Zang Guoren’s three layer structure frame theory, this research employs the method of the combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis on texts,in order to:1.Explore the frames of 5G topic reports of the two newspapers;2.Discuss the media images of 5G in the two newspapers’ reports;3.Conclude the core issues through the discourse game between the two newspapers.Based on the findings of above research, this paper makes further analysis on the current situation of 5G topic reports in China’s mainstream media during the process of international communication, and then puts forward some targeted communication strategies. This research finds that “the politicalization of 5G” is the core throughout the whole discourse game of 5G topic between China Daily and The Times. And on this basis, the two newspapers also launches their discourse game of 5G topic in three main fields: policy, enterprise and technology.China Daily and The Times present distinct frames of news reports, and employ different discourse strategies that fit their contexts and needs.China Daily presents a frame that take 5G "China’s leading, open cooperation" as its core. The Times highlights the endless argument on 5G from all walks of life in the UK,sensationally reports “China’s technology threat”,and presents a conflictive frame that take “ Questioning, denying, with a delayed development of 5G” as its core. The difference between the two frames shows that the construction of the frames of the two newspapers’ 5G topic reports are closely related to their own cultures, values, ideologies, practical interests and many other factors. This research finds that the news reports on 5G topic from China Daily and The Times generally have a tendency of politicization, based on the construction of three layer structure frame. And the confrontation between “Language traps” and“Cracking the Language traps” exists throughout the whole process. With the core of“the politicalization of 5G”,the discourse game of 5G topic between the two newspapers focuses entirely on three main fields: policy, enterprise and technology.Based on the above,in response to the problems and challenges that China’s 5G international communication faces, the study presents the international communication strategies for 5G topic, which can puts forward target-oriented proposals for countering prejudices and attacks in Western media reports. This study also contributes new perspectives for telling a good story of China’s 5G,as well as improving the international communication capabilities of China’s mainstream media.
