The meaning of sports to human beings is self-evident.Sports show the process that human beings constantly challenge themselves,conquer themselves and surpass themselves.The Olympic Games are the concentrated expression of this human activity.The Olympic Games are the largest,most widely participated sport events which have the most significant impact.The Olympic Games are not only a sports arena that athletes from all over the world compete for,but also a arena where global media compete.The news coverage of the same event in different media is often different.On the basis of linguistic theory,this paper combines theories of news communication,uses literature material method,content analysis method,mathematical statistics method and other research methods.This paper takes the New York Times' text news report of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in 2018 as the object of investigation.Because The New York Times is the most influential comprehensive newspaper in the United States.In according to Halliday's functional grammar,this paper analyzes the text discourse.And based on McLuhan's media theory,this paper analyses VR News from visual mode and auditory mode and the effect of VR news on news concept and news value which is revealed from the perspective of multi-modal discourse analysis.Through these analyses,the author tries to summarize the discourse characteristics of the New York Times in the sports report of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in 2018,and reveals the ideology of the New York Times.The author tries to make suggestions on the audience's attitude towards foreign media newspapers as well.Meanwhile,the author also tries to put forward relevant suggestions to the Chinese news media in order to raise the news reporting quality and bring China's sports reporting in line with international standards.
