As one of China’s most influential and authoritative newspapers,People’s Daily has continued to pay close attention to global sporting events. From 2002,when our athlete Yang Yang won his first gold medal,to 2022,when China hosted the Winter Olympic Games,People’s Daily has given full coverage to the Winter Olympic Games, and the narrative changes in its news coverage reflect the national mainstream media’s commitment to China’s development from a "big sports country" to a "strong sports country".The narrative changes of its news coverage reflect the media sentiment and responsibility of the national mainstream media for China’s development from a "big sports country" to a "strong sports country. This paper takes the news narratives of People’s Daily’s coverage of the Winter Olympic Games(2002-2022)as the main object of study, adopts content analysis and textual analysis, and draws on theories of framing and news narrative to closely follow the trajectory of its news narratives and identify the value implications they convey.Specifically, this paper categorises and statistically analyses the narrative content of People’s Daily’s coverage of the Winter Olympics(2002-2022)in six categories:people, projects, topics, types of coverage, positions and tones of coverage, and discusses the changes in news narratives in three dimensions:narrative voice, narrative discourse and narrative grammar. The study found that the narrative changes in People’s Daily’s coverage of the Winter Olympics broadened the space for Winter Olympics communication through the use of multiple narrative perspectives, narrator identity and narrative chronology, and made use of stable extra-narrative structures and composite sequences to form a complete story system, thereby better telling the story of ice and snow with Chinese characteristics. The narrative metaphor and narrative focus gradually show a shift from "gold medal" and"confrontation" to "humanism".The study summarises the narrative themes as treasure-hunting,heroic and catastrophic, showing a shift from the search for "gold" to the search for "love",from the creation of gods to the heroes, from heavy trauma to hope;the narrative archetypes are summarised as dream archetypes, ice archetypes and spiritual archetypes, showing a shift from the pursuit of dreams to the fulfilment of dreams. The narrative archetypes are summarised as dream archetypes, ice archetypes and spiritual archetypes, presenting the trend of change from chasing dreams to realising dreams, from exclusive sports to technological Winter Olympics, and from national heroism to human destiny community. Finally, the value implications of the changes in the news coverage of the Winter Olympics from 2002 to 2022 in People’s Daily are extracted, with a view to providing reference for the news narratives of large-scale sports events.
