The Research Of The Winter Olympic Games By People's Daily (1980-2010)

Sports shows that human beings are love to challenge their own records, overcome all the difficulties ahead them, and improve their abilities. The Olympic Games is the kind of sports that has those special characteristics. The Winter Olympic Games is the important part of the international Olympic movement. It is the highest level of international comprehensive competitions in winter sports items. Although the influence of Winter Olympic Games is far less than the Summer Olympic Games, it has the unique charm and the same Olympic spirit. More and more people are putting their eyes on the Winter Olympic Games, and it has become the focus of media reports all around the world.People's Daily is one of the most authoritative comprehensive daily newspapers in China. The subject of my dissertation is about the Winter Olympic Games report on People's Daily from the year 1980 to 2010. In this dissertation, I used the content analysis and made content analysis index. After that I tried to apply my research data and sorting to shows the general traits of the Winter Olympic Games news reports in People's Daily. Based on the theory of media frame, this paper revealed characteristics and trends on the thematic frame, structural framework and verbal frame by People's Daily.Analysis shows that the number of People's Daily reports on Olympic Winter Games is significantly increased, people and media from Chinese casts attention to the Winter Olympic Games since the Chinese athletes got more and more medals. The frame of People's Daily has also changed as the time passed by. The main changes are as follows. The news topics have varied., and the quantity of national sports news reports in Winter Olympic Games are raising quickly. Besides the reporting scores and results, People's Daily pays more and more attention to the events' background information and comments. Finally, the style of the news writing by People's Daily has also changed. The narrative perspective of People's Daily is gradually becoming objective. Narrative description of this newspaper is changed from the simple report to the detailed descriptions, which interspersed with comments. Quotations methods have been gradually diversified and so on.The essence of the Olympic Movement is the Olympic spirit. In order to better reflect the Olympic spirit, this paper suggests that in the future Olympic Games reporting, the thematic frame of this newspaper should be more multiple, non-standard and wide. The People's Daily should also strengthen the all-round, multi-angle, and three-dimensional depth reports in the Winter Olympic reports, and it's important to increase the foresight and follow-up coverage in the news reports. Least but not last, the People's Daily has to find the balance point between media guidance and the readability of reports.
