This article examines the development of public reading spaces at the Commercial Press from its inception to the present day,taking as its subject the public reading spaces it has established and the public reading spaces it has participated in.From the public reading spaces established by the Commercial Press,the impact of the Commercial Press’ book publishing on public reading and the interaction with the transformation of reading styles are examined in the context of the history of reading and publishing.It also explores the role of public reading spaces in building the brand image of publishers,carrying out reading promotion activities and promoting sales of publications,in the light of the characteristics of the new era,in the hope of providing some experience and inspiration for publishers to participate in the construction of public reading spaces nowadays.This thesis is divided into seven sections,the main points of each section being as follows:The first part is an introduction,which briefly outlines the background and significance of the study of public reading space,the current situation of the study and the research methodology,and provides a detailed explanation of the concept of public reading space;the second part divides the 126-year history of the Commercial Press into three stages,taking 1953,when the Commercial Press moved from a private enterprise to a public-private partnership,and 2002,when the Hanfen House Bookstore was founded,as the time The third part examines how the Commercial Press disseminates and strengthens its publishing brand through public reading spaces,in terms of both publication branding and publisher branding.The fourth part examines the reading promotion services carried out by the Commercial Press through public reading spaces at different historical stages,reflecting the new era in which public reading spaces have become more diverse in form,with a wider range of participating subjects,and the reading services provided have become more three-dimensional and diversified.The fifth section compares the interaction between the construction of public reading spaces and public reading at the Commercial Press from the perspective of reading history,under the modern reading system and post-modern reading methods.The sixth part draws lessons from history and makes a few suggestions for publishers’ participation in the construction of public reading spaces in the context of the current times.The concluding remarks provide a summary of the overall content.
