Since imperial civil service examination system had been abolished and schools had been developed at the later period of Qing Dynasty, textbooks suitable for new education were greatly in need. Promoted and organized by Zhang Yuan-Ji, Cai Yuan - Pei, and Gao Meng-Dan, etc, Commercial Press was the first to publish Newest Textbooks which was unprecedented and completed either in forms or in contents. It not only promoted school education' development, but also established its powerful leader position in publishing industry and became the most famous private book company by virtue of enormous profits of publishing textbook. After the Republic of China founded at 1912, Commercial Press had paid more attention to the innovation in publishing textbooks and published many textbooks such as Republic Textbooks, New Grammar Textbooks, New eve textbooks, basic Textbooks, Reviving Textbooks and a series of University books, which provided versatile textbooks for all kinds of schools in modern times depending on a wealth of talent in editing, higher Quality, advanced printing technology, richer funds, too many branches. It was acknowledged as leader in the market of publishing textbooks for a long time competing with other book companies such as the Zhonghua Book Company and World Book Company. After The Warof Resistance Against Japan broke out, Commercial Press shifted its center of publishing to rear area and continued to publish textbooks under tough conditions, which greatly relieved the serious demanding situation.As the macrocosm of modern china' s publishing textbooks, Commercial Press' s publishing textbooks had made prominent contribution to Chinese culture and education in modern times: Newest Textbooks held an important position in history of textbook development, Vernacular prose textbooks published by Commercial Press had supported and defended New Culture Movement at the period of May 4th movement, and the publication of Series of university books had also promoted process of modern university and college' s independence in modern china and also helped science prosper. As a result, Commercial Press not only provided versatile textbooks for different kinds of schools but also did much to promote universal education. Meanwhile, it fostered many trained personnel for other book companies.
