Comparative Research Of The Reportage On "8.17 Barcelona Terror Attack" Between China Daily And New York Times

In the international news communication,the mainstream media both at home and abroad attach great importance to the reportage of sudden disastrous events,a critical test on the news media's competitiveness.Enhancing the ability to report international disasters is not just a necessary choice for news organizations to demonstrate their reporting ability,attract worldwide attention and increase international presence,but an important channel to spread national voice,build national image and conduct external publicity.On the basis of news discourse analysis theories of Van Dijk,the paper makes quantitative and qualitative studies on the news reports of “8.17 Barcelona Terror Attack” from China Daily and New York Times,with the methods of discourse analysis and comparative research.Major tasks of the paper are to make an overview of their news coverage,compare similarities and differences between the two sides in discourse features,reporting strategies and news ideas,and then analyze the causes of their different reportage.According to this research,there are some similarities in the reports of China Daily and New York Times due to the same report subject and similar media positioning.But in view of the difference in media nature,media resources and sociocultural contexts,news reports of the two news outlets are notably different.As a whole,China Daily's reporting style is more formal,rigorous,short and neutral,with the use of more official discourse and less rhetorical devices.New York Times,however,pays attention to various folk sources,focuses on the in-depth interpretation and analysis of news events,and adopts a mixture of narrative techniques and expressionsFinally,in view of some deficiencies presented by China Daily during this news coverage,the paper will try to put forward some feasible suggestions in international disaster news reporting for the media outlets in China which are striving to become the mainstream media worldwide and seize the initiative in global media competition.
