The present thesis tends to explore the issue from a broader sense and place stereotypes into the dynamics of intercultural communication from the perspective of news report’s framing analysis since the traditional research on stereotype, mainly focuses on negative stereotypes and stereotypes’negative values, besides, researchers generally have approached the issue from a social psychological viewpoint which sees stereotypes as a static factor in social perception. The analysis will be based on the news report of shanghai expo in China Daily and The New York Times respectively.Framing theory and frame analysis is a broad theoretical approach that has been used in communication studies, news, politics, and social movements among other applications. It proposes an analytical framework for digging out the different stereotypes which is deeply oriented in the news texts. Within the framework, data analysis is conducted at the levels of text and framing practice. At the level of framing practices, report theme, news source and the title comparison will be discussed.Finding reveals that the adopted news reports in both China Daily and The New York Times are principally objective, but favor of their own nations can’t be concealed either. One reason for such journalistic practice of the two newspapers lies in the news media are in nature in service of governments. Besides, an unequal power relation between China and the United States is another influential reason; however, when it comes to international news, cultural factors play a decisive role in the representation of news discourse. Most importantly, the finding also reveals that together with values, stereotype can be served as the basic of communication expectation and attribution of meaning to communication behavior. It is obvious that positive stereotypes can promote communication, however, it still has the negative sides, the negative stereotypes can lead to perceptual inaccuracies, discrimination, or even prejudice. If people can enhance awareness of such impact may help inhibit stereotypes.The present thesis is practically significant because of its presenting an overview of subjective thinking of stereotypes’effects on the part of information receivers, so people can get a clearer knowledge of the difference between objective happenings and subjective thinking. In this case, on matter a reporter or a reader can find out corresponding measures to bridge the gap, which can eventually shed light on their endeavor to improve the intercultural communication competency. As we are in a global society, Chinese journalists must increase their awareness of the basic values of our own and other cultures to help foreigner know about China and accelerate China’s integration with the international community.
