The traditional rural society is a society of acquaintances without strangers,but with the advancement of rural industrialization and urbanization,the connection between people due to land has gradually been weakened.The development of rural market has provided more possibilities for people’s social interaction.The flow of things in market contains rich local knowledge,like an invisible rope,closely connecting the social and cultural members who share it.In the process of the flow of things,people extend the social relationships of the original acquaintance society to the market,and on this basis,new social relationships are derived.This article took S Town,a town in Guanghan City,Sichuan Province,as a field study to study the market handmade Chili paste with local cultural characteristics.S Town of Guanghan has always had a tradition of eating handmade Chili paste.After the space for handmade Chili paste shifted from a home to a market,various entities such as vendors,customers,and processors participated in the process,and a series of social interactions were launched around the production of handmade Chili paste at the market.This article aims to analyze the reasons why people in S Town prefer market handmade Chili paste to finished Chili paste through the production process of market handmade Chili paste,and further explore how people can interact to transform the social relationships of acquaintances in the original countryside into those in the market during the production process of handmade Chili paste.The first chapter of this article introduces the natural conditions and historical evolution of Guanghan region,and further describes the Chili paste culture in the diet of S town in Guanghan,laying a foundation for further research in the future.The second chapter aims to explain the development process of market handmade Chili paste in S Town,Guanghan.Driven by the transformation of rural modernization,S Town has experienced industrialization and land transfer,and its dependence on land has gradually decreased.The life of "leaving the land but stay hometown" has made the importance of the market increasingly prominent,but people’s demand for "market handmade Chili paste" has not changed.As a result,the production of Chili paste in S Town,Guanghan,after the introduction of auxiliary machines,bid farewell to the era of pure craftsmanship,and the production space has also changed from a home to a market.And further describes the entire process of people making market handmade Chili paste.The third chapter horizontally analyzes the reasons why the market handmade Chili paste can last for a long time in the local area.From the perspective of "people",this paper explores the role of different subjects-processors,vendors,and customers-in the continuation and development of market handmade Chili paste.These include the survival strategies of processors,the right of vendors to speak for chili varieties,and the indifference of customers to finished Chili paste,which have jointly promoted the development and continuation of market handmade Chili paste in S Town,Guanghan.The fourth chapter compares the production of handmade Chili paste at the two level fairs in S Town and Guanghan County,and explores the hidden social relationships behind the handmade Chili paste production at the township fairs.The desolation of handmade Chili paste production in the county town contrasts sharply with the bustling situation in the township.Unlike a stranger society like the county town,the countryside is an acquaintance society,where people can skillfully use acquaintance strategies through interaction in the township market to develop acquaintance relationships in society into relationships in the market.The conclusion part answers the initial questions raised in the study through integration and analysis.It is believed that compared to finished Chili paste,people personally participate in the production of market handmade Chili paste year after year,and gain confidence in the taste and quality of handmade Chili paste in the market through specific practices.This is a cognitive habit formed during the process of self certification,which makes market handmade Chili paste irreplaceable in people’s hearts.At the same time,the local knowledge of artisanal Chili paste production at the market closely connects people who share it.After a long period of practice and accumulation,the market handcrafted Chili paste production in S Town of Guanghan has gradually become a system.People who leave the countryside to live in county towns have no way of truly embedding themselves in urban society,and their social relationships remain in rural society.By returning to their hometown and participating in the production of handmade Chili paste with former acquaintances at the market,people’s original social relationships based on kinship and geography have been stabilized,and through the process of making handmade Chili paste at the market,new social relationships have emerged between customers,processors,and vendors. |
