The selection of ancient poems in Chinese textbooks is often accompanied by illustrations.With the help of the text interpretation function of illustrations,the inner spirit of poetry could be transformed into an external visible and intuitive image,thereby promoting students’ learning of ancient poetry.Ancient poetry illustrations have the characteristics of focusing on traditional culture,high integration of pictures and texts,and harmonious color matching,which are significant resources of Chinese teaching and exhibit important value in ancient poetry teaching.Firstly,illustrations have the value of cognitive enhancement.Intuitive illustrations would help students to understand the general meaning of ancient poems and deepen their understanding of the emotions of ancient poems.Secondly,illustrations have the value of moral education.For those ancient poems with moral education value,illustrations could stimulate strong moral emotions and help understand the truth in the poems.Finally,illustrations also have the value of aesthetic appreciation,and illustrations of ancient poems with bright characters and rich colors could bring students a pleasant aesthetic experience.The research started from the perspective of students and teachers,adopted the methods of questionnaire survey and interview,took primary school Chinese teachers as the questionnaire survey objects,and selected some Chinese teachers and primary school students randomly selected from each grade as the interview objects,conducted an investigation on the current situation of illustrations adoption in the teaching of Chinese ancient poetry in primary schools.This paper analyzed and summarized the survey results from four dimensions: the understanding of illustration value,the awareness of illustration adoption,the way of illustration adoption,and the teaching content of ancient poetry.We found that in the teaching of Chinese ancient poetry in primary schools,there are some problems such as low frequency in illustrations adoption by teachers,simple application methods,limited application scope,and less systematic application plans.In view of the above problems,the cause analysis was carried out,and we found that due to the lack of understanding on the importance of the illustrations adoption,teachers lack the skills to effectively adopt illustrations,and often one-sidedly understand the teaching content of ancient poetry,and the influence of ineffective illustrations in teaching materials,resulting in the existing problems in the illustrations adoption in the teaching of ancient poetry.Based on the analysis of the problems and causes,the study put forward the improvement strategies for the effective use of illustrations in the teaching of Chinese ancient poetry in primary schools.Teachers should establish awareness of the illustrations adoption and understand the important value of illustrations in ancient poems.Schools should build a training platform and provide teachers with opportunities to improve illustration application skills.Teachers should actively participate in the skill training of illustration application and improve illustration application ability in skill training.Teachers also need to improve the teaching mode of ancient poetry,use illustrations to stimulate students’ interest in learning,follow the application characteristics of double coding,build the relationship between pictures and poems,and establish a reasonable blank space for the illustrations adoption in teaching design,so as to improve the illustrations utilization in the teaching of ancient poetry.Teachers also need to clarify the teaching method of illustrations according to the value of illustrations in ancient poems,so as to convert pictures into poems,deepen the perception of text,lead the students from figure to thinking,implement moral education,interact with pictures and texts,and cultivate aesthetic ability.For the illustrations with poor effect in the teaching materials,teachers need to correct it in time to improve the effectiveness of the illustrations.
