The current junior high school English teaching design in general mainly faces many problems of superficial teaching objectives,alienation of teaching subjects,fragmentation of teaching contents,obsolete teaching methods,patterned teaching activities and single teaching evaluation.Different from the traditional English teaching mode of fragmented and isolated knowledge points,the new theme-centered unit of overall teaching has gradually stepped into the vision of education and teaching.According to the developmental needs of students and their daily communication needs,each unit of the textbook has a specific theme and language knowledge focus.It is useful to examine the forms in which unit objectives are designed,content is organized,time is allocated,and students are assessed in a holistic manner.In order to investigate and analyze the current problems of English unit teaching in junior high school,I chose this topic to conduct a study to improve teaching practices and effectively implement the core literacy requirements.This study is divided into six parts: the first part is the introduction,which mainly describes the background,purpose and significance of the study,and analyzes the current situation of research on core literacy and whole unit teaching,the second part is the investigation of the current situation of whole unit teaching design in junior high school English.In the third part,the author analyzes the problems of the overall teaching of English units in junior high schools from the perspective of schools and teachers.In the fourth part,the author explains the necessity of optimizing the unit teaching design of junior high school English and the connotation,characteristics,and optimization path of the unit teaching design of junior high school English pointing to core literacy.The fifth part shows a case study of the overall teaching design of middle school English units pointing to core literacy,using a unit of the Human Education version of the textbook as an example.This study identifies the problems of junior high school English teachers’ biased understanding,limited cognition and lack of practice in the strategy and design of holistic unit teaching,explores the path of optimizing holistic unit teaching of junior high school English that points to core literacy,improves the theory of holistic unit teaching of junior high school English that points to core literacy,and helps front-line teachers design teaching programs that point to core literacy,which helps enhance students’ learning initiative and motivation and finally implement the requirements of core literacy cultivation.
