Since 2021,China has introduced a “double reduction” policy to promote the balanced development of high-quality educational resources,reduce the burden of students’ homework,and promote the development of students’ personality.In the General High School English Curriculum Standard(2017 edition),it is advocated to infiltrate the core literacy of English subjects into English teaching to further cultivate students’ comprehensive English ability.Homework is an important part in English teaching and,as an extension and supplement,it is essential in cultivating students’ core literacy.Through literature research,it is found that English homework in junior high school is dominated by simple and mechanical exercises,ignoring the cultivation of application ability.Based on this,this research,from the perspective of the core literacy of the English subject,guided by the theory of constructivism and the theory of multiple intelligences,conducted an investigation and research on the design of English homework in junior high school,aiming to explore the relationship between the four elements of the core literacy of the subject and English homework so as to better improve and perfect the design of English homework in junior high school,and cultivate the comprehensive English application ability of junior high school students.This research takes 282 students and 20 English teachers and from a junior high school in C city and 30 English teachers from different grades in other middle schools as the research objects,and conducts research by means of questionnaires and interviews.To make up for the lack of questionnaires,face-to-face interviews were conducted with 5 English teachers and 5 students.The research mainly focuses on the following questions:(1)Compared with the core literacy goals of English subjects,what problems exist in the design of English homework assignments in junior high schools?(2)What impact does English homework in junior high schools have on cultivating students’ core literacy?Through the analysis of questionnaires and interview results,and compared with the core literacy goals of the English subject,the following problems exist in the design of English homework in junior high school: the design form is relatively simple and lacks flexibility;the purpose of homework is relatively limited;the content of homework lacks richness and novelty,and it is difficult to get close to the actual life of students;the main function of homework is to consolidate the learned content,and the phenomenon of “only fractions” still exists.It’s concluded that English homework has a certain positive impact on cultivating the core literacy of junior high school students.In terms of language ability,English homework has a positive effect on the improvement of students’ reading and writing ability,but from the interview results,it can be seen that because students’ homework is mainly written practice,the improvement of listening and speaking ability is not significant.In terms of learning ability,English homework is conducive to cultivating students’ ability of independent thinking and independent learning.In terms of cultural awareness,to some extent,English homework can deepen students’ understanding of the culture of English-speaking countries and improve students’ logical thinking ability,but this positive effect is not obvious.The interview results show that teachers pay too much attention to the practice of basic knowledge when designing English homework and neglect the cultivation of students’ cultural awareness.This research puts forward targeted suggestions for designing scientific and appropriate English homework and cultivating students’ core literacy,hoping to provide some reference for English teachers and related researchers in basic education.
