At present,the Ministry of Education promulgated and implemented the Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standards(2022 edition)(hereinafter referred to as the New English Curriculum Standards),which indicated the advent of the age of “core competencies”.The New English Curriculum Standards required promoting the implementation of the integrated unit teaching,implementing the teaching according to the blueprint of unit education,and promoting the achievement of the comprehensive performance of students’ core competencies.However,in the actual teaching,the integrated unit teaching has not been effectively implemented,resulting in the phenomenon of exam-oriented teaching objectives,fragmented teaching content,single teaching evaluation and so on.These were not very conducive to the cultivation of students’ core competencies.Therefore,it is necessary to study the integrated unit teaching based on core competencies.In this study,90 students from two parallel classes in grade 8 of a junior high school in Hefei were selected as research subjects and the two classes were divided into the experimental class and the control class.The experimental class adopted the integrated unit teaching based on core competencies,while the control class adopted the traditional teaching method.The author mainly put forward the following questions:(1)What is the current situation of integrated unit teaching and the cultivation of students’ core competencies in junior high school?;(2)Can integrated unit teaching improve students’ core competencies in junior high school English teaching? What are the specific aspects?In the four-month teaching experiment,the author used the questionnaire survey method,interview method,test method and other research methods.The research results were as follows:(1)Most teachers didn’t have a good understanding of the integrated unit teaching,and rarely used it to cultivate students’ core competencies;(2)The integrated unit teaching was conducive to cultivating students’ core competencies.Specifically,it could cultivate students’ language ability,cultural awareness,thinking skills and learning ability.At the same time,the author took the content of the fourth module of grade 8 published by FLTRP as an example to conduct a case analysis of the integrated unit teaching based on core competencies,which explained in detail how to use the integrated unit teaching based on core competencies.This part was designed to help English teachers better achieve the goal of cultivating students’ core competencies.
