| This is a report on the Chinese-English translation practice on the first part: the general report of the Hunan Rural Revitalization Report(2019-2020).Hunan Rural Revitalization Report(2019-2020),a blue book that systematically studies rural revitalization in Hunan Province, gives insights into the main progress and challenges faced by Hunan Province in implementing the Rural Revitalization Strategy since 2019 and the basic situation of rural revitalization in Hunan Province, based on which a series of measures and suggestions are put forward for further progress. Its linguistic features are similar to those of political texts such as the Government Work Report, evidenced by the use of concise, rigorous, formal and objective language, abbreviations, category words,subject-less sentences,run-on sentences and so on.The enormous differences between Chinese and foreign cultures and the features of the political text itself make the translation of the blue book challenging. In a view to carrying forward native cultures and sharing China’s and Hunan Province’s experience gained in implementing the Rural Revitalization Strategy with the world beyond, the author of the report translated the first part: the general report of the Hunan Rural Revitalization Report(2019-2020)into English and applied Nida’s functional equivalence theory to guide and explain the translation practice. This thesis mainly gives insights into the difficulties the author has encountered in the process of translation and the corresponding translation methods adopted under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory as well.Specifically speaking,at the lexical level,in translating neologisms, the author adopts the translation method of literal translation plus annotation;for words with Chinese characteristics, the translation method of paraphrasing is employed;in translating numerical abbreviations with much information, the author chooses the translation method of literal translation plus annotation, while in translating numerical abbreviations with less information, the author prefers paraphrasing;when dealing with four-character expressions, the author omits the unwanted repetitions and modifiers. At the syntactic level,in translating subject-less sentences, the author either adds the subject or uses the passive voice;as for run-on sentences, the author first figures out the logical relationships among sentences and then restructures these sentences according to the language habits of the target language. At the rhetorical level,in terms of metaphors, the author either preserves the metaphorical image or sacrifices the metaphorical image in the source text;as for parallelism, the author adopts the translation method of division and combination to respond to parallel structures with inner logical relationships. And for parallelism with synonymous expressions, the author adopts omission to avoid redundancy.Through case analysis, this translation practice report proves that the functional equivalence theory can well explain and guide the translation of political texts. Therefore, the author hopes that this practice report could provide a reference for translation practices on political texts in years to come. |
