The Impacts Of Long And Complex Sentences On The Quality Of C-E Simultaneous Interpreting And Coping Tactics

Long and complex Chinese sentences in written speech bring great challenges to Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting,yet the studies on long and complex sentences are mostly concentrated in the field of translation,and very limited studies focus on C-E interpreting,especially C-E simultaneous interpreting.Based on Daniel Gile’s Effort Model,this research explores the effects of long and complex Chinese sentences in written speech on the quality of Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting through experiment and questionnaires,and discusses the corresponding tactics and their effectiveness.The tactics include chunking and restructuring,waiting and stalling,anticipation,correction,omission and generalization.In this research,an experiment was conducted involving 10 student interpreters performing one Chinese-English SI task,and questionnaires were collected to verify the experimental results.Through quantitative and qualitative analysis,it is found that long and complex Chinese sentences have a negative impact on the quality of Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting,leading to a decline in the interpreting quality,and using appropriate tactics can effectively help improve the interpreting quality.This study hopes to help simultaneous interpreting learners better cope with the difficulties in interpreting long and complex sentences from Chinese to English.At the same time,it also hopes to shed some light on the teaching and practice of simultaneous interpreting.
