| With the profound growth of AI,many popular science books and texts in the field have appeared.Nevertheless,only a small number of these books have Chinese translations,and there is still a dearth of foreign science materials.As a result,it is crucial to introduce some top-notch foreign popular science texts in the area of AI to China.The first two chapters of the book Artificial Intelligence: A Guide for Thinking Humans served as the translation project’s source text,and under the guidance of Newmark’s text typology theory,this report conducts a textual analysis of the source text,the AI scientific text,and determines that it is an informative text.It then lists the linguistic traits of the source text: At the lexical level,it uses a lot of AI-related keywords,italicized words frequently,and uses more proper nouns.At the syntactic level,it frequently uses dashed sentences,quotation sentences,inanimate subject sentences,and long,complex sentences.Furthermore,this report presents specific case studies from three perspectives:lexical,syntactic,and discourse,combining communicative and semantic translation methodologies.At the lexical level,proper nouns are translated with conventionalized translation and annotations,italicized words with a literal translation,and AI terminology with an appropriate translation version.At the syntactic level,translation techniques for dashed sentences include word conversion,punctuation conversion,and amplification.Retention,addition,and structural reconstruction are used in the translation of quote sentences.Conversion and amplification are proposed when translating inanimate subject statements.During translation,complex and long sentences are subjected to sentence-sequence adjustments and amplification.At the discourse level,the primary objective is to maintain the original text’s cohesion and coherence. |
