| With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, block chain, big data,Internet of Things, quantum information technology and other technologies, the fourth scientific revolution characterized by intellectualization, digitalization, ecologicalization and networking has already begun, which is changing people’s lives and attracting them to explore the mystery of science. As the pace of globalization of science and technology continues to accelerate, more and more English popular science books about advanced technologies pour into the Chinese market, and readers’requirements for translation of such texts are also increasing day by day. However, the study of popular science translation is still in its primary stage in our country(Xu&Guo,2012:42).Therefore,based on the English-Chinese translation practice of three chapters excerpted from Artificial Intelligence:How It Changes the Future, this report explores translation techniques of popular science texts under the guidance of text type theory, aiming to provide valuable reference for translation of other similar texts. This popular science text, with intelligible descriptions, vivid and interesting expression styles and unique modes of thinking, can transfer profound scientific knowledge to mass groups. The text not only enables people to feel the charm and wonder of AI technology in a relaxed and pleasant reading experience, but also opens a convenient door for expansion of thinking and correct understanding of AI.This report is composed of four chapters.Chapter One is task description, including introduction to the source text, significance of the task and features of the source text.Chapter Two is process description, discussing preparations before translation, task process and quality control.Chapter Three, the key part of the report, covers case analysis,in which some English-Chinese translation techniques are studied from three levels:lexicon, syntax and discourse.Chapter Four makes a conclusion for the whole task, mainly summarizing findings, experience and shortcomings.According to Newmark’s text type theory, the source text is an informative and vocative one, which has the functions of popularizing knowledge and presenting viewpoints.Based on contents and features of the source text, various translation techniques should be applied with consideration of target readers’ language habits, knowledge levels, understanding ability and psychological needs,so that the original functions and effects can be embodied in the target text as much as possible. |
