The 21st century has witnessed the striking development of artificial intelligence(AI)technology. As an emerging AI powerhouse,China has published a large number of AI-related popular science books in recent years, which have played an essential role in popularizing science and technology to the general public;in the near future, with the flourishing development of AI technology in China,an increasing number of works in this field will be introduced to the world.Good translations will effectively facilitate Chinese technology going global. Therefore,it is of great significance to carry out the Chinese-English(C-E)translation of popular science texts. The Artificial Intelligence Revolution is written by Wang Tianyi,an AI scholar. It reviews the history of AI,reveals machine learning logic, and forecasts AI’s commercial future. As a typical popular science book,it aims to introduce basic AI knowledge to the general public in an easy-to-follow way.Based on the C-E translation of the main part of the first Chapter of The Revolution of Artificial Intelligence and in light of the Constructivist Translatology, this report aims to study the main difficulties and coping strategies of popular science texts translation in the field of AI.The difficulties encountered by the present writer mainly include the translation of proper nouns, polysemous words, repetitive words and sentences,Chinese idioms,as well as sentences with ambiguous structures and vague expressions.Under the guidance of the three translation criteria proposed by the Constructivist Translatology, this report analyzes how to solve the difficulties with typical cases, and proposes some coping strategies such as the cross-checking to proper nouns, disambiguating restructuring, interpreting and restituting approaches to Chinese idioms, the context-inspired method for polysemous words, and substituting and omitting approaches to repetition. This translation practice and the case studies prove that the principles put forward by the Constructivist Translatology are of great guiding significance to the CE translation of popular science texts. The tenet trio—knowledge objectivity, understanding rationality and interpretative validity, and conformity to the source text orientation—guides the current author to choose specific strategies to solve the obstacles in translation practice, which ensures that the translator can accurately render scientific information while providing readers with succinct information and enhancing their reading pleasure. It is hoped that these findings could offer references to popular science text translators.
