The upgradation of science and technology and the acceleration of globalization have witnessed the increasingly close technical exchanges in various countries and it also means that popularization of scientific knowledge plays an increasingly vital role in catalyzing social exchanges and improving mass cultural literacy.The material for this translation project is chosen from a popular science book published by the BBC-30 Animals That Made Us Smarter with 30 chapters in total.The translator selects Chapters 8-11 for this translation project.The book introduces the body structures of 30 animals and how scientists were inspired by them to develop various technological tools.The author of this book adopts a first-person narrative style and conveys scientific knowledge to the general public with lively and entertaining language.According to text type theory,there are informational text,expressive text and operative text,and different text types have respective translation methods.After analyzing the textual characteristics of this popular science text,the translator believes that this translated material belongs to the informational text.The translator is guided by Reiss’ s text type theory and target at the four features of popular science texts-scientific,literary,popular and interesting-to analyse lexical and syntactic levels,rhetoric devices and other aspects in 30 Animals That Made Us Smarter to summarize the translation standards and methods of this translation project.The translator also attempts to analyze the inadequacy in translation practice in an effort to provide referencing experience for future translation of popular science texts which will contribute to the popularization of scientific and technological knowledge and the development of animal research.
