Abstract/Summary:
National image is one of the core connotations of a country’s soft power,which plays an important role in internal consensus and external competitiveness.There are abundant researches on national image at home and abroad,but the strategic research on how to shape China’s image in catastrophic events is not rich.So this thesis researches the strategies of China’s image construction in the COVID-19 reports in People’s Daily Overseas Edition.Considering the long duration of the COVID-19,sample analysis is difficult to cover comprehensively,and the peak period of the epidemic is mainly from January 2020 to may 2020.During this time,the novel coronavirus pneumonia related issues and the topics to be reported have been presented.Therefore,this paper chooses the news text content about COVID-19 from January 1,2020 to May 31,2020 in the front page of People’s Daily Overseas Edition to be combed and integrated.The text analysis method and frame theory are used to analyze the news reporting framework of the selected samples.This paper explores how the People’s Daily Overseas Edition creates a responsible,national united and sticks the bottom line image of China.Firstly,it analyzes the high-level structure of the news framework from three aspects: the theme,the title and the introduction,and sums up the strategies of shaping China’s image in the People’s Daily Overseas Edition.The main shaping strategies are: the theme of the report highlights the focus through agenda setting,the news title is concise and easy to understand,highlights the theme,and the news introduction elements are comprehensive and straight into the theme.Secondly,from the description of the main events in the news events,the audience attribution and evaluation of the news events,the middle hierarchy strategies of the news framework is analyzed.And concluded that the People’s Daily Overseas Edition in the description of the main events,the contents are clear to be easily to know the whole picture of the event;In the aspect of attribution and evaluation,the audience is guided positively.Finally,it analyzes the low-level structure strategies of news framework from the use of commendatory and derogatory words,word combination,rhetorical devices and the visual style of the newspaper.And summarize the strategies of people’s Daily Overseas Edition,such as flexible use of commendatory and derogatory words to convey attitude,skillful combination of sentences to highlight the key points to be expressed,diversified rhetoric to enhance the readability of the text,and visual style to serve the theme and so on.This paper summarizes the three-tier structure strategies of news framework: in the high-level structure of the news framework,the theme,title and introduction of the report are closely linked to each other,and the joint efforts are increased to highlight the main thrust of the news;In the middle-level structure of the news framework,describe the main events carefully and guide the audience’s position actively;In the low-level structure of the framework,through words and careful arrangement of visual style,the audience’s attention is attracted to the point news paper want to be paid attention to.The three-tier structure works together to show the responsible,national unity and stick to the bottom line of the China’s image.
