The middle school is an important period in one’s study life,which can influence one’s future academic and life development.Obviously,the activity is of vital importance for the middle school student.On the one hand,study engagement can positively predict students’ academic achievement.On the other hand,study engagement can motivate students’ positive qualities such as optimism,resilience,sense of meaning and creativity,and then promote the growth and development of middle school students.So it is regarded as an important indicator of academic performance.As a kind of time personality,future time perspective can reflect the individual’s expectation to future.From the individual variable as independent variable,this study explore the influence of future perspective influence on study engagement among middle school students,largely focusing on the mediating effects of self-control ability and academic delay of gratification.A total of 845 adolescents from a middle school in Tianjin were recruited and completed the Adolescen Future Time Perspective,the Middle School Self-Control Ability Questionnaire,Delay of Gratification Questionnaire and Study Engagement Scale.The results indicated that:1.In addition to the two negative dimensions of future negative and future confusion,girls score significantly higher than boys in future time perspective and other variables;2.The cross-semester grade comparison shows that junior middle school students is better than senior high school students in academic performance.According to the comparison in the same period,whether in the junior middle school or in the senior high school,the first and third grade students are better than the second grade.3.There are significant correlation among future time perspective,self-control ability,delayof gratification and study engagement.,expect the correlation is not significant between future negative and future plans;4.Adolescents’ future time perspective positively predict study engagement;5.The future time perspective not only had direct effect on study engagement,but also could effect adolescents’ study engagement through three indirect paths:through the mediating role of self-control;Through the mediating role of academic delay of gratification;Through the chain mediating role of both self-control and delay of gratification.Based on the above results,this research throws out some suggestions.When we have to intervening the study engagement of middle school students,it is necessary not only to help middle school students to establish the concept of future time,to guide them to think about the plan of future and explore the future courageously,to have a good vision for the future,but also to perform the ability of self-control and delay of gratification,.Only in this way could the middle school students improve their academic performance,promote their physical and mental health,and then have an optimistic attitude to the future life.
