Cohesion Difficulties And Coping Strategies In Simulating Chinese-English Consecutive Interpreting ——A Practice Report On Documentary Strange Food

In translation practice,textual cohesion of the target language is particularly important as it is related to target language listeners’ understanding of the text.In the process of interpretation practice simulation,attention should be paid to ensure the coherence of the target language,so that target language can be semantically complete,readable,and accords with the knowledge level and cultural background of the readers.This thesis takes the documentary Strange food as the subject of the simulated Chinese-English consecutive interpreting practice.According to the characteristics of the heavy colloquialization of the corpus,and under the guidance of cohesion theory,the corresponding coping strategies are proposed for the problems encountered in the interpretation practice,which can help to enhance the coherence of the target language to a certain extent.A highly colloquial corpus with a combination of narration and dialogue is selected for the interpretation practice.Through the analysis of textual features,problems that cause difficulties in the cohesion of the target language are found at the lexical,sentence and expression levels.Specifically,these include: repeated presence of words with the same meaning and frequent use of newly created structures at the lexical level;unclear logical relationships and missing constituents at the sentence level;excessive repetition and ambiguous information reference in colloquial expressions at the expression level.Through the case study,the cohesion theory expounded by M.A.K.Halliday and R.Hasan in the book Cohesion in English is used as a guide for proposing strategies to cope with these problems.At the lexical level,difficulties in cohesion can be addressed by means of simplifying the repetition and collocation;at the sentence level,they can be solved by means of logical structure explicitation and necessary constituent supplementation;at the expression level,they can be managed by means of substitution,ellipsis and reference.The use of these strategies can make the text semantically coherent and the cohesion more natural and appropriate,which in turn will also contribute to the increased fluency and readability of the target language and make it more consistent with idiomatic expressions.Through the simulating Chinese-English consecutive interpreting practice,the thesis conducts an in-depth analysis of the difficulties that occurred in the process and proposed corresponding strategies to enhance the cohesion of the target language at the lexical,sentence and expression levels.It is hoped that this interpretation practice can serve as a reference for future translation of similar documentaries.
