The Difficulties Of Chinese-English Conference Consecutive Interpreting And Coping Strategies

Chinese-English Conference Consecutive Interpreting has played a very important role in China’s foreign development since the reform and opening. Monographs on consecutive interpretation have been published a lot, but there is not much literature which takes the text of the opening ceremony of the Conference Consecutive Interpreting as an example to discuss difficulties of Chinese-English Conference Consecutive Interpreting and and specific strategies. Hence, it deserves our increasing attention to research on difficulties and strategies of the Conference Consecutive Interpreting.Chinese-English Conference Consecutive Interpreting aims to make the source language:Chinese which is spoken by the conference speaker accepted by the English audience, and to make both sides of the conference can communicate with each other. Meanwhile, interpreters should give full consideration to audience awareness. All these have been attached great importance by Interpretative Theory:translation is a kind of communicative activity with the purpose of conveying communicative meaning. Interpreters, after having a good comprehension of what the speaker is saying, should jump out of the shell of the Chinese language and manage to express the content and feelings of the speaker in Chinese. Therefore, Interpretative Theory can provide beneficial theoretical guidance for the study of the Chinese-English Conference Consecutive Interpreting.This thesis takes the 9th Fujian International Summer Camp on English Learning and Scientific Popularization as an example with the guidance of Interpretive Theory, and combines with the characteristics of Chinese-English Conference Consecutive Interpreting to discuss the difficulties in terms of language, culture and untranslatability and publicity translation and to give corresponding strategies. It can be concluded that in order to have the speaker and the audience in a conference communicate freely and smoothly, interpreters should do pay special attention to the following three aspects:In terms of Language, interpreters should express the meaning smoothly, give full consideration to the identity and emotion of Chinese speakers of the conference and to audience awareness, and select appropriate language; In terms of Culture, interpreters should take different cultural backgrounds of Chinese and English into account, fully respect the different cultural thoughts and values of Chinese and English; As to untranslatability and political sensitivity, interpreters should have their own positions and give full play to the subjective initiative, namely using specific interpreting strategies according to the environment, to achieve the goal of efficient communication between conference speakers and English audiences.
