| This is a report on the English-Chinese translation practice of The Use of Economics in International Trade and Investment Dispute. The source text of the translation practice is Chapter Ⅱ and Chapter Ⅳ from an English book in international economics and trade,The Use of Economic in International Trade and Investment Dispute. This book was first published by Cambridge University in 2017.The two chapters excerpted are respectively written by two experts in the fields of international economics and trade and international law, introducing the significance of using economics in WTO disputes.Depending on the analysis of the source text characteristics, this report is guided by Reiss’ s Text Typology predominantly, one of the representatives of German functionalist theories,to handle the translation difficulties at the levels of lexis, syntax and text. The translator refers to a large number of references, including Business English dictionaries, parallel academic papers in international economics and trade and internatinoal law,and financial information and news released on the official websites or domestic mainstream media, and adopts several translation methods such as conversion, amplification, omission, negation and substitution, etc.to do the translation. This translation practice also lays a solid foundation for the future translation. At the level of lexis, relevant references are the main basis for the translation of terms and abbreviations. The key to comprehending polysemies and metaphors is to rely on the source text context, and the target context is crucial for the re-expression of the target text.At the level of syntax, the translator adopts the methods of division, combination and shifting according to the meaning groups, using the methods of amplification and omission,as well as linear and reverse translation,to translate long sentences. For the translation of the sentences of passive voice,in some cases,it is necessary to remain and highlight passive voice in the target text,so as to convey a certain emotions or contents that the authors focus on.Besides, reasonably adding, omitting or substituting punctuation marks also increases the readability of the target text.At the level of text, the coherence and cohesion of the translation is a major concern for the translator, which requires the translator to be free out of the form limitation when translating, using idiomatic expressions to explicitly transmit information and logic as required. |
