| The source text of the translation practice report is excerpted from The SAGE Encyclopedia of Intercultural Competence which was published by SAGE on June17 th in 2015 and edited by Dr.Janet M Bennett who is a famous expert of intercultural communication in the USA.There is no Chinese version now for the book(the first edition).Section B Chapter D of the book(from Page 244 to Page 264),which has been translated by the translator,covers the study on intercultural competence from the interdisciplinary perspective.The disciplines mainly include:Culture and Cultural relativism,Applied linguistics,Intercultural communication skills,Psychology,Sociology,Cultural differences and Integration.The translation of this section will help the Chinese readers learn about the principles of intercultural communication and the cultural root of it,and benefit academic researches on intercultural competence.The SAGE Encyclopedia of Intercultural Competence is a social science work with the feature of informative type texts,showing truth,and concentrates on logical relationship of a context.Functional equivalence theory is taken as the principle of the translation in order to help Chinese readers understand the content of the original text,and obtain the same information and appreciation as that of the original text readers.On the basis of Nida’s theory of functional equivalence and the practice of the translation report,the translator has adopted translation methods such as conversion and extension at the lexical level,conversion of passive voice,negation and affirmation,the rearrangement of word order,shifting between phrases and sentences and the conversion of clauses at the syntactic level,reproduction at the textual level,and the annotation at the cultural level in order to analyze and deal with difficulties in the translation report.Translation is characterized by practice under the guidance of proper theory,and the theory of functional equivalence is highly instructive for the translation of informative texts. |
