This is a translation project on The SAGE Encyclopedia of Intercultural Competence. It is a book written by Janet M.Bennett,The Intercultural Communication Institute. This work classifies intercultural competences into 20 broad themes, including “Intercultural Conflict and Negotiation”,“Language and Linguistics”,and “Social Justice”.The signed A-Z entries are thorough without being verbose. They are cross-referenced and provide resources for additional research.A thematic list of references and a time line of advances in intercultural studies are the most useful appendixes.Intercultural communicative competence is put forward for cultural conflicts. It is the ability to deal with practical problems in intercultural communication flexibly on the basis of understanding and mastering foreign cultural knowledge and communicative skills.Intercultural competence also known as “cross-cultural adjustment”,refers to the ability to adapt behaviors in one cultural environment to another cultural environment after modification.Intercultural competence is a new concept and its definition is still under discussion. The Encyclopedia of Intercultural competence aims at introducing the knowledge of the influence and development of intercultural competence to readers,so the original text has the function of informative text.By studying Newmark's text typology, the book features a combination of informative and expressive functions,so in the process of translation,Peter Newmark's communicative translation theory is the main strategy, supplemented by semantic translation theory. The report consists of five parts. The first part is the introduction of translation projects and mainly contains its characteristics, significance, the original author introduction, and so on;the second part is the description of the original text, including the type of text and its influence;the third part is the introduction of Peter Newmark's translation theory;the other part is case analysis, which mainly connects Newmark's translation theory with translation practice, including the extended meaning of words, terminology, sentence and discourse translation;the final part mainly introduces the writing shortcomings in the process of translation practice and summary of the experience.
