Intercultural communication is interactions between people with different cultural backgrounds.Close intercultural communication is one of the features of today's world. Therefore, intercultural competence is playing a prominent role in trade, education diplomacy, science and technology. However, intercultural study should not be confined to objective and visible cultural products.Instead, the cultivation of intercultural competence is to recognize verbal and non-verbal communication, beliefs and values in order to support effective interaction under various cultural backgrounds. Thus, with the help of the mentor, the translator chose to translate The SAGE Encyclopedia of Intercultural Competence as translation task. The chief editor of the book is Janet M.Bennett,co-founder and current executive director of the Intercultural Communication Institute. The book, published in 2015,mainly discusses various aspects from understanding cultural differences, adapting to cultural differences,to cultural integration with the introduction to intercultural theories, aiming to help the readers cultivate intercultural competence. The present project includes 24 pages, illustrating more than 10 terms of intercultural theories.According to Peter Newmark's theory of text typology, the book can be classified as an informative text with some features of an expressive one.In view of this, the translator adopts communicative translation as the main strategy and semantic translation as the supplementary one.The report consists of five parts. The first part is the introduction to the project; The second part deals with translation process; The third part introduces the theoretical framework; In the fourth part, case analysis and specific translation techniques are elaborated at lexical, syntactic, discourse and cultural levels; The fifth part is a conclusion on achievements and inadequacies.
