The SAGE Encyclopedia of Intercultural Competence was edited by Dr.Janet M.Bennett of the American Academy of Cross-Cultural Communication and published by SAGE(first edition)on 17 June,2015.The source text was introduced by the supervisor and the translation task was completed by five students including the translator. With the constant development of globalization, the communications and connections between countries are getting closer than ever before.Boundaries between different languages, cultures, religions and countries are disappearing rapidly. Thus, individuals have more opportunities to get access to various kinds of cultures. With the economic development of China, the spread of Chinese culture and the rise of China’s international status, individuals are required to be equipped with strong intercultural competence to promote the intercultural communication. The translated text which includes section A of Chapter D mainly discusses the development of cross-cultural perspective of continuous adaptation, development theory, diversity dimensions, definitions of intercultural competence and multi-disciplinary perspective of cultural review and anthropological perspective of culture. These parts of translations will help target readers have a better understanding of the concept of development and diversity factors that influence development, and have a more comprehensive understanding and cultivate intercultural competence by viewing culture from a multidisciplinary perspective.According to Peter Newmark’s text typology, this book belongs to the informative text as it uses objective language, rigorous logic, and has many technical terms. Therefore, the main method that translator in the process of translating uses is communicative translation, and semantic translation is adopted as the supportive translation method.Through this translation practice, the translator hopes to improve her own translation ability and provide some references for readers to understand intercultural competence.
