A Translation Report On The SAGE Encyclopedia Of Intercultural Competence (P68-P91)

The source text of the translation practice report is chosen from The SAGE Encyclopedia of Intercultural Competence written by Dr.Janet M Bennett,who is the executive director of the Intercultural Communication Institute(ICI).The book(the first edition)was published on June 17~thh by SAGE in 2015,and as an encyclopedia,it covers a wide range of fields and has great reference value both in theory and practice,especially for the students majoring in MTI,which is of great help to enriching their cross-cultural knowledge and improving their cross-cultural competence.The translator has translated the Pages from 68 to 91,including the Indigenous Psychology Approach;Communicating across Cultures with People from India;Communicating across Cultures with People from Japan;Communicating across Cultures with People from Korea;Communicating across Cultures with People from Latin America.The translation of this part will help the Chinese readers learn about communicative characteristics and cultures of the above countries,and can also be accessible to the relevant researchers in their intercultural studies.The book is a social science work.According to Newmark's text typology,it will be classified as an informative type text,which shows facts,focuses on logic and context,and also has some of the feature of the expressive and vocative types,thus,when translating,the translator has adopted the methods of communicative translation as major and semantic translation as minor.This report consists of five parts and the first part is about the translation task,including the brief introduction of the source text,the author of the book,the features and significance of the task;the second one is about the translation process,including translation preparation,while-translation and post-translation revision;the third one is theoretical framework,which introduces Newmark's text typology,semantic translation and communicative translation strategies;the forth one is the cases study at the level of word,sentence,culture and text to analyze and deal with difficulties in translation.The translator has used translation strategies such as conversion and extension at lexical level,and conversion of clauses,translation in reverse order,sequential translation,and recombination at syntactic level;At the cultural level,literal translation plus annotation and foreignization are used,while at the discourse level,repetition is mainly used.The last one is summary on the report,including conclusion,reflection and gains.
