Ever since the economic reform in 1990 s in China,Suzhou has been one of the most significant cities flourished with industrial development.Xiangcheng district as the industrial region in Suzhou,is considered as one of the foundations that houses the most advanced technological research facilities within the Yangtze river delta.Under this status,Zhouqi Studio has received a commission to design a high-tech complex for Client Service International Inc.in Xiangcheng,Suzhou;the author has participated in and played as the key member throughout the whole process of the design.Based on the design, this paper aims to discover the most suitable form of buildings in urban hightech area through the research of economic factors.Through research on the development process of high-tech space, the paper would elaborate on the progression from technology parks to technology complexes and explain the characteristics of urban high-tech complexes supported with relative case studies. In term of economic approach,high-tech complex is both a property and a product;given this circumstance, the paper would explain how economic schemes and financial theories would have both direct and indirect impact on the design of this type of complex. The financial attribute of the project enables the financial cycling of property and funds, which can potentially bring the developer with massive profits. This aspect as the main innovation point accompanied with other design schemes would achieve the maximization of efficiency and contribute toward economic growth.Furthermore, the application of reinforced concrete structure under industrial assembly system would allow the building to construct in a short period of time with prefabricated components.Prefabricated building techniques and modular space organization are used in the design to not only create an environmentally friendly complex, but also create a financially efficient project. In term of building form, the project adopted courtyard space layout and waterscape borrowing methods to present a harmonious image both from geological perspective and spiritual perspective. The paper is divided in three chapters:The first chapter would be the introduction. It provides the reader with the research background, research basis, research purpose, research subject, contents, and methods. The second chapter would be most of the theories and research data collected to support the paper. Its first part being the research status on high-tech urban complexes, elaborating the development process from technology parks, the prototype of high-tech complexes,to urban complexes;it emphasizes the development of Chinese high-tech complexes to support the topic. The second part is to discuss the conflict and integration of three key points – land value, urban development, and hightech space from an economic approach. It is explained through economic input-out analysis, economic policies, and functional distribution of urban complexes on a macro level;and it discussed the operating model and financial cycling on a more detailed approach. The third part would be the discussion on reinforced concrete structure under industrial assembly system for R&D complex. It comprehensively explained the development and techniques of prefabricated building and modular space organization as well as the advantage provided in the design of CSII Technology Complex. The fourth part would be discussing modern form and space organization based on locality and traditional culture and explaining how vernacular Jiangnan architecture is inherited in this innovative design. The third chapter is a comprehensive analysis of the project Client Service(CSII)Technology Complex itself. It elaborated the industrial background of Xiangcheng district, the client’s background, site analysis, design schemes and space layout, product planning and operating methods, and technical methods in construction. The fourth chapter is conclusion and discussions of the paper. The word count of the paper is approximately 32000 words, with 77 figures and diagrams.
