The origin and development of architecture began with the response to the natural environment and the climate in the biological environment is the main factor during those elements.Distinct regional climate has a direct impact on the progress and the evolution of the residences. In the past researches on the climate adaptation of residences, there are mainly two research directions. The first is from the perspective of architectural thermal engineering(the climate adaptation of residences is explained by simulating the indoor and outdoor climate parameters). The second is to identify the relationship between them through analyzing the morphology and climate of residences. It is obvious that both of them get their advantages and disadvantages. In terms of their limitations, this study attempts to use comparative research methods by comparing the architectural form of courtyard houses in Suzhou with the architectural forms of archetypal representative houses in China,in order to use this comparative field of vision to further support some of the existing conclusions and provide inspiration and reference for today's passive adaptive technology research by revealing more about the ways and laws of the adaptation of Suzhou residences to climate adaptation in the research directions before. This article is divided into four parts(seven chapters)to explain the topic and the main contents are as follows:The first part is the first chapter, which is the preliminary research part of this paper. The introductory part explains the background and significance of the study, the definition of the research object, the contents and methods, and the research framework. The second part is the basic research part which consisted of the second chapter and the third chapter. The second chapter is the basic research involved in this study, including the basic theory of comparative study, the related concepts of regional climate, the main influence of regional climate on buildings, and the morphology of residential buildings affected by climate. The third chapter is the construction of the comparative study in this paper.Including general thinking, comparison of subject and object determination(including ideas, methods and comparison of the establishment of the main object template)and a comparative study of the technical line. The third part is the main part of this article which consisted of the fourth chapter, the fifth chapter and the sixth chapter. The fourth chapter is mainly a comparative analysis(the architectural form and the climate adaptability). The fifth chapter is based on the relationship between the architectural form and the climate adaptability. The sixth chapter is the analysis and summary of the climate adaptation methods and their adaptation laws of the traditional courtyard houses in Suzhou on the basis of the previous chapter. The fourth part is the seventh chapter, which summarizes the entire article and looks forward to the future.
