| The Library. With the proliferation of information on the internet, knowledge no longer exists and searched for in a physical sense. The library must redefine itself and its existing means of storage and access, physically and digitally to stay current with its users. Rethinking this building type will contribute to the reconceptualization of the space of information. Libraries have already adopted new programs and roles to adapt to the changing needs of society. To accelerate this change and find the role of the library as books and information are digitalized, this thesis looks at new ways of integrating physical user interaction.;The Book. At a smaller scale, the physical book has also been affected. The change from physical pages to digital text has not revolutionized the spread of knowledge as was done in the past with the use of technology. To change the monotonous task of reading, the book was cut up and its potential for engaging the user was analyzed. After a physical change, the systems within a book of pagination, margination and binding are now found to be irrelevant. This change is reiterated in the making of this thesis book. For example, the orientation of the book is shifted to recontextualize the contents of the page, focusing on the composition of the page within a book as much as the content on it.;The Thesis. The thesis, both research and physical book, aim to challenge these changing notions through simultaneous explorations of `library' and 'book'. Focusing on the circulation of books and people, the efficiency and relevance of a library's current catalogue system, storage, organization, circulation and accessibility were analyzed. These areas deal with different aspects of the library system which can be redesigned to better accommodate its constantly changing needs. The redesign focused on a change in context to reintroduce new means of interaction.;The construction of the library as a tool allows users to manipulate their space and how they engage the bookshelf. In bookshelves located throughout the city, books who have been withdrawn from the library system can be stored among readers. Categorized by the Library of Congress Classification, a category for each corner and moved by its users, the resulting collection of books will serve as an index of use and browsing as the topics in the shelve start to show neighborhood reading trends. Searching and reading become a physical process and the library becomes a reactive entity.;The book consists of a body of knowledge and the library consists of the organization and resulting circulation of those knowledges. Through a reactive and changeable organization, the library becomes recharged and relevant to its users, allowing a bit of chance to exist in the books that find them. |
