Fudan University Digital Library Individuals Library Management System Design And Implementation

With the deep involvement of networking and information technologies in all areas of our society, universities are now facing the opportunities and challenges brought by the information. As a documentation and information center of the university, the library has to change the contents, patterns, and scope of its service accordingly. Nowadays university libraries are facing two common challenges. They need to archive the collections with information technologies to provide better service. Meanwhile, they needs to distinguish themselves by providing more diversified and personalized services.To help solving the problems such as simple and user unfriendly services that exist in current university libraries, this thesis proposed a unique Web-based personal library management system. The system was initiated based on the investigation of personal book collections of univserity users and developed with the J2EE architecture and JSP dynamic web development tools. It uses Tomcat as its web application server and MySQL to provide the background database service. Proxool - a database connection management component and the popular logging framework Log4j was also incorporated. The system was designed multi-layered with the MVC pattern to follow a low coupling and high cohesion design practice, so that improved system maintainability and scalability was achieved. It consists of four relatively-independent functional modules. The user-administraton module manages personal information and allow individual registration and login. The book-administration module allows the user to add, search, and modify the books in the personal collection. It also provided user-defined labels to classify the books. The book-reading module helps the user to read books by allowing him to generate and publish notes or reviews. The book-lending module helps users to borrow books from each other.
