Abstract/Summary:
In this work we propose an inter-domain traffic engineering framework. We divide the problem in two sub-problems: inter-domain traffic control and inter-domain QoS signaling. We use MPLS to solve the first sub-problem. MPLS as known today can only be deployed inside a uniquely administrated network. We propose extensions to MPLS for inter-AS LSP deployment. To be consistent with ongoing research in this field, we consider already proposed extensions to RSVP-TE for our inter-AS LSP setup. For the second sub-problem, to signal the state of inter-domain paths, we propose the use of the QoS_NLRI path attribute in BGP.; The goal of our traffic engineering technique is to obtain a better QoS compared to plain IP routing. We want to protect the traffic across multiple ASs from congestion, node, and link failures. We assume that intra-domain traffic engineering and optimization techniques are available inside all ASs. Our simulations are conducted on OPNET Modeler 10.5. Our results show that inter-domain traffic engineering, specifically path protection against congestion and failures, can significantly improve QoS. They also show that the response time to congestion or failure events can significantly impact the experienced Qos. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)...
