IP network is non-connective, there are two vital disadvantages in IP network, that is, first, packets are forwarded by nodes independently so it is likely to beget congestion; second, it is without QoS guarantee and the real-time services can not be provided. Traffic Engineering is one of the mechanisms of realizing QoS, it performs network resource optimization, handles the congestion and provides fast recovery when the link or node is failure. The vital disadvantages of IP network will be solved when the Traffic engineering is deployed. The explicit routing feature of MPLS facilities the traffic engineering.The paper studies MPLS-based traffic engineering. It introduces the necessary and possibility of deploying traffic engineering and analyzes the structure model and mathematic model of traffic engineering. The theory of network flow about traffic engineering and the components of MPLS intra-traffic engineering are introduced. The paper focuses on the study of intra-domain routing algorithm, it analyzes the advantage and shortcoming of several intra-domain routing algorithm and a new method for minimum interference routing is proposed. Combining this method an improved routing algorithm for intra-domain traffic engineering based on traffic profile and minimize maximum bandwidth utilization is presented. The simulation shows that it can further optimize the resource utilization. The difficulties of deploying the inter-domain traffic engineering are introduced. Based on the research of the new technology of inter-domain traffic engineering, a new solution of deploying the MPLS-based inter-domain traffic engineering is presented and this solution based on extending present interior gateway protocol and border gateway protocol provides a new method to perfect inter-domain traffic engineering.The future research areas of MPLS Traffic Engineering are mentioned at the end of this paper.
