Abstract/Summary:
The following thesis offers a unique concept of office furniture design---an office work chair that accommodates the human need for taking short naps. The purpose is to search for opportunities to increase productivity among white-collar workers. The process of design development has been developed based on a human-centered approach, beginning from a general context to a more specific context. With the main consideration of interaction occurring between human needs and technology, the project mostly focuses on analysis of human activity within a modern organization, such as ALTEC, at the University of Kansas. In the meantime, there are many research studies indicating the benefits of taking a nap to increase productivity at work. This design research and development offers a unique concept of helping people in the office work environment adjust their office chairs from work mode to nap mode and back again with a minimum of effort.
