Abstract/Summary:
A common practice in the manufacturing industry is to require a product to conform to certain standards. A unitless measure of how well the product meets these requirements is called a capability index. To attain some level of conformance, the index must be above a predetermined value. Sampling manufactured items from the process will give an estimate of this index but does not necessarily guarantee that the process achieves the estimate. Constructing an appropriate hypothesis test will give a statistical basis for evaluating the performance of our index. The theoretical distribution of the capability index is very complicated, so simulations can be employed to determine the results.
