The radar target simulator can generate the target echo signal with velocity,angle,and distance information in real time,which is uesd to facilitate the debugging and verification of the radar system.Based on FPGA,this paper designs a multi-functional circular array radar simulator.According to the mission requirements and application background,this paper firstly introduces the overall design of the radar target simulator system.And then it gives the detailed theoretical analysis of echo generation model,noise model and clutter model,which is verified in Matlab.Combined with a Virtex-5 board,this paper illustrates the design of hardware platform,focusing on the clock module,interface module and digital-analog conversion module.Next,the FPGA implementation of the target simulator is described in two parts,the design of C code in PowerPC and the design of Verilog logic code in signal processing module.Finally,the debugging of the target simulator is carried out,analyzing the outputs of DA module under two working modes.The results prove that the work performance of the radar simulator system meets the expected requirements.The multi-functional circular array radar simulator mentioned in this paper already has a complete target echo simulation function,which can generate echo information including target,noise and clutter in real time.The constantly optimized software and hardware platform ensure additional functions adding and scale upgrading,which provide a good technical basis for future study.
