Abstract/Summary:
The “One Belt & Road” initiative proposed by China in 2013 is a high-level concept of the “Silk Road Economic Belt” and “21st Century Maritime Silk Road”.This initiative advocates the active development of partnerships with countries along the “One Belt & Road” and the strengthen cooperation with these countries in the fields of politics, economy, trade and culture, then to utilize the existing bilateral or multilateral mechanisms with the countries concerned and ultimately achieve all-round development and mutual benefit.Although the "Belt and Road" proposal has been proposed for several years now,the current stage is still the initial stage of implementation,so at this stage some of the main tasks in the construction process – which key countries could be chosen and how to develop bilateral relations to encourage more countries to participate in the construction of the “One Belt and Road”.This paper selects Poland as the study country, starting from the multi-environment of Poland and the exchanges between China and Poland in several fields and focus on the analysis of trade between the two countries from the macro and micro perspectives,to explore the possibility and significance of utilizing bilateral trade with Poland to promote regional and other countries' participation. This paper explains the reasons for recommending Poland as a key country along the “One Belt & Road” initiative.First of all, this paper analyzes the passive situation of Poland in the camp of Western countries and the limited development in terms of import, export or investment;on the other hand, the rapid development of East Asia in the same period has also enabled Poland to gradually expand its development space to East Asia.Secondly,as China being the most important country in East Asia,it is imperative for Poland to develop economic and trade relations with China. However, the main economic and trade problems between China and Poland are the increasing trade surplus and the small proportion of trade in each other's total trade volume, which are both a challenge for two countries and a driving force for mutual development.Thirdly,Poland is one of the countries with outstanding performance in European countries in terms of its national conditions, geographical location and economic status, which have laid a strong foundation for China to choose Poland as a key country for bilateral development, and also support the construction of the “Belt and Road”.On this basis,by sorting out the current political, economic, trade, cultural and educational technology exchanges between China and Poland, the good communication foundation in various fields between the two countries and the good intentions on participating in the construction of the “One Belt and Road” with each other could be shown out.Based on trade data between the two countries, this paper analyzes the largest and fastest growing trade categories between the two countries in the context of the “One Belt and Road” and the product categories which are highly dependent on each other, and then selects key product categories to calculate the trade complementarity index between the two countries. From these analyses the final conclusion could be get: the greater complementarity between the two countries exist in the five major products categories, from which point both sides can make breakthroughs and take advantage of each other. In this way, while gradually alleviating the main trade problems between the two countries, the typical example on common development for other countries will be established to drive the further construction of the “One Belt and Road”.Finally, the paper puts forward specific policy recommendations on how to reduce the huge trade deficit in Poland-China trade and how to expand the way of trade exchanges between these countries.
