A Study On Production And Reception Of Masculinity In Internet Idol Draft Shows

The rise of the internet idol draft shows has brought about a variety of masculinities,the new characteristics different from the traditional masculinity have been affected by many factors.From the production to the reception of masculinity,this study focuses on the production process of idols and the reception of core audiences.Therefore,what kind of masculinity do the male contestants in the internet idol draft shows show?How was this masculinity produced and how was it received by the core audience? These are the questions that this study needs to think about and answer.This study uses content analysis and in-depth interviews to explore the presentation,production and reception of masculinity in online talent shows.Through coding and analyzing the data of 29 contestants and the interview data collected from 19 interviewees,including program producers and fans,it was found that the masculinity in the internet idol draft shows have a soft and versatile character,which is a mixed masculinity.In the process of masculinity production,the gender traits of the players are manifested through the concept of the program,costume arrangement and post-editing.The star-making model under the cultural industry,the talent selection mechanism under the input of Korean current culture,and the reconstruction of masculinity by policy and discipline are main influencing factors.As a result,multiple forces have affected the production and presentation of diversified masculinity.When the core audience receives this kind of masculinity,guided by the industrial production,it forms a new aesthetic standard under the presentation of various types of idols,and interprets the masculinity in the process of the establishment of idols' character setting with emotional color.Fans will gradually shift their attention from idols to themselves in the process of loving and following idols,completing emotional practice in the process of receiving masculinity.Therefore,the emphasis on the strength and character of the players,the emotional expression based on idols' character setting,and the emotional practice in the "common performance" jointly reveal the process of the core audience receiving masculinity.Finally,on the basis of the above analysis,the author thinks and discusses the influence and enlightenment brought by the change of masculinity.
