A Study On The Reports About Donald Trump By People's Daily

On January 20,2017,Donald Trump took office as President of the United States,becoming the oldest and least experienced in Politics president in the history of the United States.Donald Trump has attracted much attention of the news media since he took office.Therefore,this paper chooses the reports about Donald Trump by People's Daily from January 20,2017 to November 9,2018 as the study samples,and analyzes these reports quantitatively and qualitatively.Firstly,this paper analyzes the items and structural components of these sampled reports in order to learn the general condition of these sampled reports.The items include “length” “source” “theme” “tune” and so on,and the structural components include “title” “lead” “detail” “consequence” “evaluation” and so on.Secondly,this paper analyzes the concrete topics involved in the sampled reports of different themes in order to learn which topics are presented in the sampled reports and these topics are presented under what frames.Finally,this paper analyzes the items of Donald Trump's media image,including “performance in internal affairs” “performance in diplomatic affairs” “external support” and so on,and related high-frequency words in order to learn what images of Donald Trump are presented in the sampled reports.The study found that the sampled reports are more objective as a whole and reflect the political consciousness and overall situation consciousness of People's Daily.In terms of layout,most sampled reports are placed on the international version and the reports placed on the front page all involve Sino-U.S.relation.In terms of type,the sampled reports have diverse forms,messages and newsletters predominate in the sampled reports.In terms of source,the sampled reports use various sources to reflect their objectivity.In terms of theme,the sampled reports focus on the diplomatic field,especially Sino-U.S.relation.In terms of schematic structure,the sampled reports contain less structural components that have a strong subjective color.As a whole,People's Daily mainly constructs a “problem” frame in the reports about internal affairs,a “divergence” frame in the reports about diplomatic affairs except Sino-U.S.relation,and a “friendship” frame in the reports about Sino-U.S.relation.Moreover,the images of Donald Trump presented by People's Daily was mainly “rule-breaker in question” “profit-seeking American supremacist” “fickle but hard-line pragmatist”.
