Research On Chinese Science And Technology Image Presented By The New York Times

As an important part of the national image,the country's scientific and technological image is an important window for the world to understand the status of China's science and technology development.With the enhancement of comprehensive national strength,building an innovative country and becoming a world science and technology powerhouse is a long-term plan for China in the new era.The development of China's economy and the transformation and upgrading of its industrial structure have enabled China to achieve many outstanding achievements in the field of science and technology.The international community is paying more and more attention to the development of China's science and technology field.In the context of globalization,the construction and dissemination of China's scientific and technological image has increasingly become an important issue.This article takes the New York Times' s China-related science and technology reports from 2014 to 2018 as the research object,and uses the content analysis method,statistical analysis method and other research methods.Taking the framework theory of communication field as the theoretical basis of Zang Guoren,this essay answered the question of what and how to report China's science and technology by the New York Times.Further more,the essay refined the three reporting frameworks of the New York Times' s image of Chinese science and technology,and summarize the image of science and technology products,technology enterprises,analyze the distortions and misunderstandings in the perception of China's overall scientific and technological image,and analyze the New York Times from the aspects of international environment,Sino-US relations and media management.This essay listed reasons for the problems in the presentation of China's scientific and technological image,and the improvement measures to shape China's scientific and technological image,which may provide reference for the construction and dissemination of China's scientific and technological image.This thesis consists three parts: introduction,body and conclusion.The introduction summarizes the important concepts and keywords of this study,and expounds the research methods,research innovations and deficiencies.The body is divided into four chapters.The first chapter gives a brief overview of the national science and technology image,the New York Times science and technology report” and Framework Theory,including the characteristics of the national science and technology image.In addition,this chapter also explains three levels of macro,meso and micro frameworks by Zang Guoren.This theory is an important basis for the interpretation of the New York Times' s image of China's science and technology.The second chapter relies on the three-level structure of the framework,and carries out statistical analysis and content analysis on 228 samples.On the macro level,it concludes that the number of scientific and technological reports on the New York Times is increasing year by year,the frequency is increasing,and the topics are wide-ranging.On the meso level,it expounded the majority of the news genre,the lack of positive reports,and the majority of the neutral reports.On the micro level,the China-related science and technology reports mostly quote the US local sources,the threat of killing and the skepticism of killing Concurrent conclusions.The third chapter combines the New York Times' effective sample of China's science and technology reports,and summarizes the three news reporting frameworks frequently used by the New York Times' China-related reports.They are rapid development,fruitful results framework,ambitious threat framework,and a skeptical framework that magnifies weaknesses.This chapter also starts with different reporting subjects,summing up a government image of actively promoting the development of science and technology,a image of a dynamic technology enterprise,the image of a broad market of technology products,etc.,and proposing the New York Times to China The reports of science and technology show the characteristics of positive and negative,vertical and horizontal combination,and forward-looking.The fourth chapter analyzes the problems of the New York Times in the science and technology threat theory and deliberately distorts the reality in the China-related science and technology reports,and proposes the rapid rise of China's power,the intensification of Sino-US international friction,and the national consciousness.The opposition of the form is the reason why the New York Times distorted and misinterpreted China's scientific and technological image.Finally,it gave reasonable suggestions on how to establish an objective and positive national scientific and technological image,including deepening scientific and technological reform,transforming communication strategies,and actively strengthening communication,thereby enhancing China's scientific and technological influence and international discourse power.
