The Internet of things,as a bridge between the physical world and the digital world, has greatly enhanced the information exchange and intelligent decision-making in social production and life. And the wireless sensor network(WSN),as a component of its information perception layer, realizes the key function: digitizing the physical world. With the development of technology,WSNs are playing an increasingly important role in more and more fields. However, sensors are energy constrained and sometimes it's very inconvenient to recharge or replace all of the batteries of the sensors. Methods to improve the energy efficiency of the WSNs has been a hot area of research.Designing a reasonable energy efficiency metric is an important basic work of WSNs.On the other hand, the openness of radio transmission makes WSN vulnerable to interception or interference, multipath routing protocol can provide reliable, secure and load balanced routing services, but few multipath routing protocols focus on energy efficiency, therefore,it is necessary to design an energy-efficient secure multipath routing protocol which can prolong the network lifetime and improve its security. The main contribution and innovation of this paper is as follows:First,we propose an energy efficiency metric. After the in-depth analysis of the energy model of WSNs,methods to improve energy efficiency, and current energy efficiency metrics,we propose the energy-cost-per-useful-bit(ECPUB)metric to improve the energy efficiency and balance the energy distribution. It takes advantage of the concept "utility" in economics, and the energy consumption of transmitter and receiver, residual energy, the data quantity that sink needs and receives are taken into consideration. We discussed the impact of data quantity and the imbalance of node energy on ECPUB.Then we apply it in LEACH protocol. The simulation shows that the lifetime of 95% nodes in WSN is extended by 7%~12%.Second,we propose an energy-efficient secure multipath routing protocol. As factors about energy consumption is seldom considered in current secure multipath routing protocols,an energy-efficient secure multipath routing protocol(EESMR)is proposed.Based on AOMDV protocol which is widely used in WSNs,EESMR considers the residual energy and security of nodes in the establishment stage of multipath, and introduces ECPUB into the selection of paths. In the data transmission stage,it uses(t,n)threshold secret sharing scheme, multiple paths are adopted for transmission to improve security, and the number of paths is determined according to the security probability of the path to save energy.Simulation results show that EESMR protocol can improve network lifetime while ensuring functionality and security of the network. Finally,we summarize the main work of this article and give an outlook for future.
