Absence Of Risk Perspective: How Traditional Mainstream Media Frame Artificial Intelligence

In this risk society,technical risks become the most important source of modern risk.In recent years,Artificial Intelligence has made breakthroughs both in theory and technology,and has become an important core to lead a new round of scientific revolution and industrial transformation,and has been promoted as a national strategic.However,at present,there is no ethics and legal constraints in the development of Artificial Intelligence,and its potential safety and ethics issues will bring enormous risks to human society.Artificial Intelligence can't be deified,nor should it be demonized.In the process of promoting technological development and social integration,we need to rationally develop Artificial Intelligence.The mass media must bear its own risk responsibility and make a contribution to avoiding the risks of Artificial Intelligence.Based on the above thinking and the risk society theory of Ulrich Beck and Anthony Giddens,this paper studies the reports of the People's Daily on Artificial Intelligence issues as of May 2018 through content analysis and framework analysis.The report carries out research to explore how traditional mainstream media balances presenting technological advancement and revealing risks in the communication of this emerging scientific and technological knowledge.The study has shown that the traditional mainstream media represented by People's Daily rely on traditional authoritative sources when reporting on Artificial Intelligence issues,and attach importance to macro and positive discourse construction.In addition,the results also show that traditional mainstream media support and respect the development of science and technology in the period of China's modernization transition,and at the same time strengthen the leading role of the government and innovative enterprises in the development of Artificial Intelligence.However,the traditional mainstream media have over-respected scientific and technological rationality in the reports,rarely speak for the public and lack the perspective of risk communication.The potential risk of Artificial Intelligence is weakened and diluted in the construction of this topic,making the media likely to be another source of risk.This study calls on the media to actively undertake the task of risk enlightenment,nurturing and expressing social rationality and realizing risk justice.
