With the rapid development of network technology and the wide application of mobile devices,social media represented by WeChat has become a hot topic for academic circles.According to the 41 st China Statistical Report on Internet Development,as of December 2017,WeChat Moments occupies the top ranking of typical social application usage.The research on the use and self-presentation of WeChat Moments is not only the interest of individual's daily life and network behavior,but also the academic mission driven by the observation and exploration of the online phenomenon.This paper uses quantitative and qualitative research methods to analyze and interpret the self-representation in WeChat Moments through in-depth interviews,text analysis,questionnaires,and observational experience.This study focus on the question including the profile,motivation,process,frequency,and strategy of self-presentation.1,500 WeChat Moments text samples,in-depth interviewees of 20 samples,and questionnaire respondents of 530 samples that enriching research data,this also provides a basis for the interpretation of individual perspectives and the analysis of group perspectives.This paper consists of seven parts.The introduction part mainly focuses on the research background,significance and literature review.Chapter 2 presents the research questions and design,including the research methods,sample related information and theoretical basis.Chapter 3 summarizes the self-presentation of WeChat Moments from the forms,sources,emotions,scenes,and thematic features.Chapter 4 interprets the self-presentation motives,including self-disclosure and display,social communication and relationship maintenance,recreational entertainment and temporary relaxation,and the motivations of group ownership and identification.Chapter 5 interprets the concrete process of self-presentation,familiarizes with stage props,selects performance forms,checks subject content,controls performance boundaries,plans behaviors,and packages performance roles;divides visible areas,visualizes performing audiences,and formulates favorable comments.Core performance elements such as performances and interactions were analyzed.Chapter 6 makes statistics on self-presentation reviews and strategies.Most people maintain a high degree of attention and activity in the WeChat Moments.Everyone who welcomes and moderates defense strategies uses a more general strategy and demographic characteristics.Under the corresponding group differences,we found that women has a higher frequency of self-presentation,while men prefer to use exemplification strategies and so on.Chapter 7 summarizes the study and reflects on the limitations of the study.On the whole,the self-presentation in WeChat Moments has a tendency of rationalization and reflects the practical motivation of instrumental rationality.From the specific process,the imagination and real skills of the audience make the performance smoother.The research also finds that individual differences and group differences exist widely in the self-representation in WeChat Moments.
